Profile of the Ideal Leadership Academy Candidate

The Flinn and Brown foundations desire to select Fellows with a broad range of experience from all walks of life and perspectives.
The ideal candidate will:
- Possess a strong desire to be a civic leader at the state level, such as serving as a member of a state board, commission, or advisory council; a state elected official; a state government leader, or a policy advisor;
- Be committed to civic engagement, demonstrated by current or past civic involvement;
- Be able to analyze substantive, state-level public-policy issues;
- Show the capacity and willingness to make fact-driven decisions, consider different perspectives, and base public-policy decisions on serving the common good;
- Exhibit an ability to be an effective leader, as evidenced by current or past work experience, volunteer, school, or church activities; or related activities;
- Have taken other preparatory steps to become a civic leader, such as through participation in a local or regional leadership-training program.
Selection Process
Application Portfolio
Participation in the Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy begins with compilation and submission of an application portfolio. Included in the portfolio are multiple letters of endorsement, an application including formal essays, and a resume, which together provide the basis for consideration. The portfolio is designed to determine the extent to which the nominee meets the ideal candidate profile.
The confidential selection process is highly competitive, with more applications from well-qualified nominees than the approximately 25 Academy positions available. Those not selected for one class may be considered for future sessions.
When applying for the fellowship, applicants are required to commit to:
- Participate in the Academy’s series of 12 day-long seminars, including attendance at all seminar sessions;
- Engage actively and productively with mentors;
- Develop and complete a personal civic-leadership plan with milestones;
- Stay connected to the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership in the future.
